2012 The Movie – A review

The Movie

Having watch the movie, somehow I feel the movie is only big in the wow factor. Aside from that, having the Mayans prophecy as a thought of a doomsday event, that is totally debatable.

Presenting the end of time/mankind seemed to be Roland Emmerich’s specialty as he also directs Independence Day & Day After Tomorrow. The subject he brought up seemed to brought up thoughts, aside for it being a fiction. It question how mankind behave toward an end of time scenario has always been an interesting subject to bring to the screen.

But to my dismay, in 2012, he failed to emphasize on the storyline itself, and even though the characters somehow classically got intertwined to one another (which in my opinion is very soap opera-like), this movie put too much effort in awing audience rather than putting humanity value in it.

And to think that government of the world would act as shallow as shown by the movie, seemed ridiculous. Bravery shown by the President of the United States was also rather illogical. I might refer to the end of time scenario to a movie (I forgot the title) where the US government built a humongous shelter in some mountain and they start to lottery the inhabitant which the winner is decided through merit and capability. And I believe the time frame is rather shorter than those shown in 2012. (Dang, I forgot the movie-but the gurl look like a young Helen Hunt)

So, the verdict? 2012: Even though they put so much interesting theory on earth crust movement, huge solar neutron attack, pole shift, it is only filled with wow factor of special effects, and not much story in it. Fatherhood over divorced family, heroic sacrifice, mankind? A classic plot found in most soap operas. The story is rather shallow and classical.

Doomsday

Being born a Muslim, I grew up with stories of the prophet and apocalyptic prophecy based on the Qur’an. In which I find it fascinating that the Qur’an description of the final doomsday is very much similar to a star going supernova theory. As cited in the Surah Al Qiyama verse 6 to 9, that God will bring the moon and the sun together. And in some other verse and surah it is said that the sun will be just over our heads as mountains melt and ocean breaks apart.

Taking it to my simple human mind, perhaps it is literally brought together as our star Sun bloated up to burn its final energy before it became a black hole.

So when will doomsday come? I don’t know. Perhaps all you have to do is just to look up.
